However, pale does not necessarily mean completely white. Individual Albino Penis Envy mushrooms can display shades of cream, silver-grey and blue, while different parts of the same fruiting body may show different tones.
Maturity can change this appearance further. Caps may develop increasingly noticeable grey or blue coloration as the fruit develops, while physical handling can add darker blue bruising.
Therefore, APE mushrooms can vary considerably in colour even though reduced pigmentation remains one of the cultivar’s defining physical characteristics.

Why can APE mushrooms look blue?

APE caps can naturally develop pale grey, silver or blue tones as they mature. In addition, physical pressure can damage mushroom tissue and produce darker blue or blue-green bruising.
Because the surrounding tissue contains relatively little pigmentation, these colour differences can appear particularly dramatic. Traditional drying can make them look more pronounced as the fruiting body loses water and contracts.
Nevertheless, visible colour should not be used as a potency scale. A deeply blue mushroom is not automatically stronger than a paler specimen.
Natural variation also means that one package can contain pale cream fruits alongside mushrooms showing considerably more grey or blue coloration.
Visible bruising and pigmentation do not provide a reliable quantitative measurement of psilocybin concentration.
What happens when Albino Penis Envy mushrooms are dried?
Fresh APE fruiting bodies contain substantial amounts of water. During traditional dehydration, moisture gradually leaves the mushroom tissue and its physical structure contracts.
This transformation is particularly noticeable in the thick stems associated with Albino Penis Envy mushrooms. As they dry, substantial stems become smaller, firmer and denser. Their surfaces can also develop pronounced wrinkles, folds and fibrous textures.
Compact caps lose volume as well. Consequently, they may become thinner, more irregular or slightly curled around the edges. Pale cream, grey and blue coloration can remain visible after dehydration.
Freeze drying creates a different physical result. Because frozen water leaves the mushroom under reduced pressure, freeze-dried APE generally retains more of its original volume and develops a lightweight, porous texture.
Traditionally dried Albino Penis Envy mushrooms instead develop a compact and dense whole-fruit structure. Once dried, keep them properly sealed and protected from humidity, excessive heat and direct sunlight.
