Melmac mushroom
Melmac mushroom is an unusual Psilocybe cubensis variety within the wider Penis Envy genetic family. Its chunky stems, irregular proportions and golden-to-brown caps can give individual mushrooms noticeably different shapes.
Space Bug keeps each Melmac mushroom as traditionally dried whole fruit. Dehydration removes moisture while the mushroom naturally contracts, creating the dense, firm texture associated with conventionally dried mushrooms.
How is Melmac mushroom related to Penis Envy?
Melmac mushroom belongs to the genetic family generally associated with Penis Envy. However, Melmac has developed its own recognizable characteristics through continued cultivation and selection.
This distinction matters because Penis Envy now describes a broad family of related cultivars rather than one completely uniform mushroom. Different lines can express noticeably different stems, caps, pigmentation and overall proportions.
Melmac represents one of those distinctive expressions. For example, mature mushrooms can develop broad or irregular caps alongside thick stems. Their shapes can also become twisted, curved or asymmetrical.
Historical documentation surrounding early Penis Envy genetics remains incomplete. Therefore, claims about an exact genetic family tree should be treated cautiously. What cultivation records do consistently support is the close relationship between Melmac mushroom and the Penis Envy family.

What effects are associated with Melmac mushroom?
Melmac mushroom contains the psychoactive compounds psilocybin and psilocin. These compounds interact with serotonin receptors in the brain and can temporarily alter perception, cognition and emotional processing.
Changes in sensory perception are common during psilocybin experiences. For instance, colours may seem more vivid and textures may attract unusual attention. People can also perceive movement or patterns differently from normal.
Thought and emotion can change as well. Some people report euphoria, curiosity or an unusually immersive state of mind. Others experience introspection or a different sense of time. However, the experience remains highly individual.
Because Melmac belongs to the Penis Envy family, mushroom communities often associate it with relatively strong effects. Still, a cultivar name cannot establish potency. Psilocybin concentrations can differ between individual mushrooms and batches.
Furthermore, stronger or more noticeable effects are not necessarily positive. Psilocybin can cause anxiety, nausea, confusion, dizziness or distressing perceptual and emotional changes.
Descriptions of Melmac mushroom effects reflect reported experiences. They cannot predict the potency or effects of a particular mushroom.

Why does Melmac mushroom look so unusual?
One of the most recognizable features of Melmac mushroom is its irregularity. Instead of producing uniformly straight stems and symmetrical caps, the cultivar can develop chunky, curved or twisted fruiting bodies.
The caps also change considerably as they mature. Younger specimens may have compact rounded caps, while mature mushrooms can open outward and develop uneven or wavy edges. Their colour generally falls somewhere between yellow-gold, caramel and brown.
Meanwhile, stems tend to remain pale and substantial. Blue or blue-green areas may appear after the tissue becomes bruised. This reaction occurs in many psilocybin-containing mushrooms after physical damage.
Because every fruiting body develops independently, one package can contain several different shapes and sizes. Space Bug keeps the Melmac mushroom whole rather than grinding it, so these natural differences remain visible.
Blue bruising is a physical reaction in mushroom tissue and should not be used to estimate potency.
What happens when Melmac mushroom is dried?
A fresh mushroom contains a large amount of water. During traditional dehydration, that moisture gradually leaves the fruiting body. Consequently, the mushroom becomes much lighter and smaller.
Melmac’s thick stems make this transformation particularly visible. As moisture disappears, the stems contract and their surfaces become more textured. Likewise, the caps become thinner, drier and more compact.
Traditional dehydration also creates a different physical result from freeze drying. A conventionally dried Melmac mushroom becomes relatively dense and firm because its tissues contract as they lose moisture.
Freeze drying, by comparison, tends to preserve more of the fresh mushroom’s original volume and creates a porous structure. Therefore, two Melmac mushrooms from similar fresh fruit can look quite different depending on the drying process.
After dehydration, protection from moisture becomes important. Keep the product properly sealed and store it in a cool, dry place away from direct light and excessive heat.
Melmac mushroom characteristics
Penis Envy genetics
Melmac belongs to the broader Penis Envy family. However, continued selection has given this cultivar its own recognizable physical characteristics.
Unusual morphology
Curves, twists and asymmetrical growth frequently appear across individual fruiting bodies, giving Melmac its characteristically irregular appearance.
Golden-brown caps
Cap colour can shift from warm gold to caramel and brown. In addition, mature caps may open outward and develop uneven edges.
Dried whole fruit
Traditional dehydration contracts the fruiting body and creates a firm texture while keeping each individual mushroom intact.
