Colour is one of the easiest characteristics to distinguish TAT Smurf from many familiar Psilocybe cubensis varieties. The albino phenotype produces pale caps and stems rather than strongly pigmented golden or caramel fruiting bodies.

Areas of blue or blue-grey colouring may also be visible on dried TAT Smurf mushroom. Psilocybin-containing mushrooms can bruise blue following physical damage or handling, although the amount of visible bruising cannot be used to determine potency.
Because these are whole fruit mushrooms, variation is expected. Individual pieces may differ in cap shape, stem thickness, dimensions, colouring and degree of contraction after drying.
