As a result, modern APE combines the thick and compact fruiting-body structure associated with Penis Envy with dramatically reduced pigmentation. However, individual mushrooms can still vary in size, shape and the amount of blue coloration they develop.

What do Albino Penis Envy mushrooms look like?
Albino Penis Envy mushrooms have one of the most recognizable appearances in the Psilocybe cubensis family. Unlike classic Penis Envy, APE lacks the usual golden-to-caramel pigmentation. Instead, fruiting bodies typically appear white, pale grey or slightly blue.
In particular, APE commonly develops thick, robust stems topped by compact bulbous caps. The caps may remain pale white or develop pronounced silver-blue and deep blue tones as they mature.
Blue coloration can also become more noticeable after handling. However, although bruising frequently occurs in psilocybin-containing mushrooms, the amount of visible blue does not provide a reliable quantitative measurement of potency.

Albino Penis Envy vs Penis Envy

Both varieties commonly develop thick stems and compact caps. However, classic Penis Envy usually has tan, golden or caramel pigmentation. Albino Penis Envy, by contrast, develops pale white, grey or blue fruiting bodies because of its reduced pigmentation.
In addition, APE tends to produce smaller fruiting bodies and relatively few visible spores. John Workman’s account also describes the variety as less vigorous than original Penis Envy.
Both varieties have reputations for comparatively high potency. Nevertheless, laboratory testing shows substantial variation between individual samples. Therefore, neither the PE nor APE name establishes the potency of a particular mushroom.
Where did Albino Penis Envy mushrooms come from?
Unlike the disputed early history of original Penis Envy, the creation of Albino Penis Envy has comparatively strong documentation. Mycologist John Workman began developing the variety around 2005 using Penis Envy and PF Albino genetics.
At first, the resulting mushrooms looked relatively conventional. However, Workman continued selecting subsequent generations because he wanted mushrooms that expressed both the albino phenotype and the characteristic Penis Envy shape.
Eventually, selected offspring produced pale, thick-stemmed mushrooms with compact caps. After further stabilization, that genetic line became the Albino Penis Envy mushrooms commonly known today as APE.
Therefore, unlike many mushroom strain origin stories that rely heavily on community folklore, APE has a named breeder and a documented development history.
Why freeze dry Albino Penis Envy mushrooms?
Traditional dehydration generally removes moisture through circulating air and sometimes additional heat. Freeze drying works differently. First, fresh Albino Penis Envy mushrooms freeze. Then, low pressure allows frozen water to leave the material through sublimation.
As a result, freeze drying creates an extremely dry and porous whole mushroom with a lightweight, crisp texture. In addition, the process helps retain more of the fruiting body’s original physical structure.
