Penis Envy mushroom is one of the most recognizable cultivated varieties of Psilocybe cubensis. Its unusually thick stem, compact cap and distinctive proportions give the variety its name and separate it visually from many conventional cubensis mushrooms.
In addition, Penis Envy has developed a reputation for comparatively high potency. Laboratory competitions and community testing have produced some high-potency Penis Envy samples. However, potency still varies between individual mushrooms, cultivated lines and batches.
What is a Penis Envy mushroom?
Penis Envy mushroom belongs to the Psilocybe cubensis species. Unlike many cubensis varieties, it typically develops a very thick stem and a comparatively small cap that remains close to the stem even as the mushroom matures.
In fact, this unusual morphology affects reproduction as well as appearance. Mature Penis Envy mushrooms often release relatively few spores because their caps do not open as fully as those of conventional Psilocybe cubensis.
Over time, cultivators have also developed numerous related varieties. For example, Albino Penis Envy, Melmac, Penis Envy Uncut and several modern hybrids all trace at least part of their lineage to the broader Penis Envy family.

The unusual history of Penis Envy mushroom
Penis Envy has one of the most debated origin stories in psychedelic mushroom culture. Earlier accounts linked its development to several prominent figures, including Terence McKenna and Steven Pollock. However, later interviews challenged important parts of that story.
Mycologist Richard Gutierrez, also known as Rich Gee, later described receiving Amazonian Psilocybe cubensis spores that had reportedly originated with McKenna. According to his account, he selected and repeatedly cloned an unusual mutant line until the distinctive Penis Envy morphology emerged.
Nevertheless, parts of the early history remain difficult to verify. Therefore, the modern account provides useful context rather than a completely documented scientific pedigree.
What are Penis Envy mushroom effects like?
Like other Psilocybe cubensis varieties, Penis Envy mushroom contains psilocybin and psilocin. These psychoactive compounds can alter visual perception, sensory processing, mood, thought patterns and the perception of time.
For example, reported experiences can include intensified colours, geometric patterns, altered spatial perception and strong emotional changes. In addition, some people describe deeply introspective or immersive experiences.
Penis Envy also has a stronger-than-average reputation within the Psilocybe cubensis family. Some laboratory competition results support the existence of particularly potent specimens. However, the variety name cannot predict the chemical content of an individual mushroom.
Moreover, higher psychoactive intensity can also increase unwanted effects. Psilocybin may cause anxiety, panic, confusion, nausea, dizziness or distressing changes in perception.

What does a Penis Envy mushroom look like?
Penis Envy mushroom typically develops a dense, thick stem with a relatively small cap. In particular, the cap often stays close to the stem rather than opening widely at maturity.
Caps commonly range from tan to caramel or golden brown. Meanwhile, the stems tend to remain pale or creamy white before handling or bruising changes their appearance.
Blue coloration may appear when physical damage affects the mushroom tissue. However, visible blue bruising does not provide a reliable measurement of psilocybin concentration.
What happens when a Penis Envy mushroom is freeze dried?
Traditional dehydration generally removes moisture with circulating air and sometimes additional heat. Freeze drying works differently. First, fresh mushroom material freezes. Then, low pressure allows frozen water to leave the material through sublimation.
As a result, freeze drying creates an extremely dry and porous structure. In addition, whole fruit can retain more of its original physical shape than it typically would after conventional dehydration.
This difference can be especially visible with Penis Envy mushroom because its thick stem and compact cap create such a distinctive morphology.
