Many Psilocybe cubensis varieties develop relatively slender stems and caps that broaden considerably as they mature. Penis Envy often follows a different physical pattern.
In particular, PE commonly produces a substantial pale stem supporting a comparatively small cap. The resulting fruiting body can appear compact, dense and unusually thick through its lower portion.
The cap may also remain relatively close to the stem instead of expanding into the broad profile associated with many mature cubensis mushrooms. However, individual fruits still vary in height, cap diameter and stem thickness.

Young Penis Envy mushrooms generally begin with compact caps positioned above thick developing stems. As the fruit matures, both structures increase in size, although their proportions remain unusual compared with many conventional cubensis varieties.
Caps commonly develop tan, golden or caramel-brown pigmentation. They can expand with maturity, but many remain comparatively compact rather than opening into a broad, flattened shape.

Why are Penis Envy stems so distinctive?

What happens when a Penis Envy mushroom is dried?

This transformation is especially visible in the thick stems of Penis Envy. As moisture leaves the tissue, substantial stems become smaller, firmer and more fibrous. Their surfaces can also develop wrinkles, folds and irregular contours.
Compact caps lose volume as well. Consequently, they become thinner and may curl or wrinkle around the edges. Tan, caramel and golden-brown pigmentation can remain visible while sometimes appearing deeper in the dried fruit.
Freeze drying produces a different physical structure because frozen water leaves the mushroom under reduced pressure. Therefore, freeze-dried fruit generally retains more of its original volume and develops a lightweight, porous texture.
Traditionally dried Penis Envy instead develops a dense, firm and compact whole-fruit texture. Once dried, keep the mushrooms properly sealed and protected from humidity, excessive heat and direct sunlight.
